While "rogue hole" is a real oceanography term, it does not mean a giant whirlpool or drain opening in the sea. In physics, a rogue hole is simply an unusually deep wave trough between two wave crests, essentially an inverted wave. The spinning whirlpool visuals in this reel are AI generated CGI, and the Quanta Magazine headline shown at 0:54 was digitally edited. The real 2020 article is titled "The Grand Unified Theory of Rogue Waves". Deep wave valleys do happen in rough seas, but the ocean does not open up into a literal drain.
