France Football launched the Ballon d'Or Of All Time (BOAT) as a digital fan poll for its 70th anniversary, where supporters pay 1 euro to vote. It was designed from the start as a public fan vote, not a physical trophy or an official award presented at the main ceremony. France Football issued a clarification because fans were confusing the digital poll with the Super Ballon d'Or. They were not trying to backpedal when Cristiano Ronaldo took a huge lead, in fact, France Football actively published articles highlighting Ronaldo's lead on their own website.
