The numbers align with WHO data showing malaria claims around 600,000 lives a year, with nearly three quarters of those deaths being African children under five. The ecological science holds up too. Mosquitoes were introduced to Hawaii in 1826 and devastated native honeycreeper birds with avian malaria. In the Arctic, mosquito swarms really do force caribou onto windy ridges, reducing their feeding time. Most ecologists agree that while removing all mosquito species would temporarily disrupt local food webs, other insects like midges would fill the gap without causing ecological collapse.
