When event venues or wedding lawns point high-powered spotlights straight up into the night sky, the beam illuminates the undersides of birds flying overhead. Against the dark sky, their reflective bellies look like a swirling cloud of glowing white dots. The bright light also disorients them, which is why they end up circling together inside the beam.
